Mr. S.K. Agarwal, formerly known as "Himalayan Academy," proposed the notion of a fully residential school stretched across a large campus in the early 1990s. Mr. Agarwal was captivated by the idea of a school that would not just focus on academics, but also try to bring out the best in a child, having excelled in both academics and games during his own school days. When he observed a residential school in Chennai on a visit to the coastal city, his yearning became a mission. He returned with an idea to create something similar in our own Eastern India. Coming from a low business background, it took him more than 5 years to plan and organise the resources necessary to open the school. Finally in the year 1997 and with just 60 students, HIRS started.
In its 25-year history, there have been two major turning points: the first in 2009, when "Himalayan Academy" became "Himalayan International Residential School" with the introduction of the Cambridge Curriculum, and the second in 2018, when we began offering day school services to local communities. We are constantly striving to improve, and we hope you will enjoy learning more about us as you peruse the pages of this website.
